VRO -
Spigthoff Tournament
(14.05.2005)
As every year VRO Hockey Club
organized their annual mixed tournament having invited all other clubs
to join in for the fun. And what a fun it was. A total of 8 teams
signed up and played for the winners’ cup. Some very competitive
hockey matches were played demonstrating the high level of hockey
skills available on the island. The team ‘De Paus & Vesseur’
however proved to be the fittest of all teams for that weekend
beating team ATC by 2:0 in the final, taking the grand winner’s price
of a giant Magnum Champaign bottle home. This fantastic tournament was
once again living proof of the active hockey community on Curacao.
Beside of good hockey, lots of social happenings took place and a very
nice BBQ made this tournament certainly one to remember. Thanks to all
the generous sponsors, the organisation committee for their superb job
well done and of course to everybody who was present. For more
pictures please navigate to the gallery?
Hey, by the way, some of you guys even made it to the
Hall of Fame
(..shame?!?)...check it out! >>

Antillean hockey women learn valuable lessons
Four games, four losses and ten goals against. For
everybody involved with the team it was a tough
one to take. Particularly in the final encounter
as the Antillean women controlled the pace of the
game from start to finish. One of the most painful
moments came at the end of the first half. With
the Cubans ahead 2-0, the Antilles were awarded a
penalty, usually a piece of cake for Miente Gast.
She had suffered a painful blow to the head at the
beginning of the first match and as a result was
forced to sit out most of the first three games.
Now she had the chance to put all that misery
behind her and put her team back in the game. But
Gast put the ball left of the goal. "After all
that had happened, everybody wanted her to score
that penalty. I guess this was just one of those
games where luck wasn't on our side," lamented
Duelberg.
However, lack of fortune doesn't tell the whole
story as Duelberg is quick to admit. If his ladies
have performed above all expectations against one
of the best squads in the region, the trip to Cuba
has also exposed several weaknesses in his team
that will have to be improved upon if the Antilles
want to compete for the top spots at next year's
Central American Championships in the Dominican
Republic. One is the inability to hold the ball up
front in order to build up sustained pressure. As
Cuban midfielder Larisleidi Olivera put it in her
analysis of the Antillean team: "Technically
they're good," she said, "but they miss good
strikers." Kiona Wellens and Kirsten Roldaan could
have made a difference, but both were either
hampered by injuries or needed elsewhere on the
pitch for tactical reasons. Another area that
needs to be improved upon is physical
conditioning. The Cuban players were all fitter
and faster than their Antillean counterparts. "The
Antilles must get in better shape and should
realize that hockey is a tough game," warned
Olivera.
Cuban coach Hilario Yera also had praise for the
Antillean team. "It's technically a strong team,"
Yera said. "And they have got good tactical
positioning. They move well across the pitch,
especially in defense." "I was also impressed by
the goalkeepers, they were very good," he said of
Charlotte Hartmans and Sylvia van Eeden. "So I'm
convinced that at this moment in time the Antilles
have a good chance against other teams in the
region.
The Cuban team has surely shown to be one of the
best within the Americas. The visit to Havana has
further strengthened the ties between the Cuban
and Antillean Hockey Federations.

Naha hockey ladies preparing for
Cuba
The NAHA National Women Team is gearing up for an
Inter-Nation Match Series in Cuba. The event will
take place during the 31.03 – 09.04.2005 in
Havana. A total of 4 official FIH registered
matches will be played against the Cuban National
Women Team. NAHA team manageress Marieke
Dennert-Kleijn and coach Lothar Duelberg (both
CHC) have selected 15 players originating from
Curacao and St. Maarten.
As to put “steam into the engine”, the team
is currently training twice a week plus at least
one test match on weekends. It is expected that
the Cuban ladies will be physically very strong
and fast players, however, the NAHA team may have
a bid of a competitive edge when it comes to
technique and tactics. But nobody really knows the
current strength of the Cuban team, so utmost
efforts are deployed as to prepare the NAHA ladies
as best as possible.
The 4 scheduled matches will be played on a water
pitch at the hockey stadium in Havana. This
Inter-Nation Match Series in Cuba aims to further
expose Antillean Hockey within the Pan Am region
and to provide play experiences to the players on
international level. It further serves to
strengthen the ties between the Cuban and
Antillean Hockey Federations. The visit to Havana
is a logical follow-up after NAHA’s first
appearances at an international women hockey event
at the PanAm Hockey Cup in Barbados April 2004
(7th place).
The Netherlands Antilles hockey team is currently
ranked 34 at the FIH (Sahara)
Women’s World Hockey ranking.
The following person will be travelling to Cuba:
Players:
Charlotte Hartmans v.d.Rijdt (CHC), Laurien Dumas
(VRO), Ingrid Gonesh (CHC), Truke Boxtel
(Marines), Miente Gast (Vrienden), Majanka
Barselaar (Marines), Gonneke Hermanides (Marines),
Sanneke Kokkeler (CHC), Kiona Wellens (Jeugd),
Niskea Huidekoper (St. Maarten), Linda Noordzij (
Marines), Nada v. Klink (Marines), Irene Wiersma
(Marines), Kirsten Roldaan (St. Maarten), Sylvia
v. Eeden (Marines) Officials: Marieke
Dennert-Kleijn (Team Manageress), Lothar Duelberg
(Coach) and Hans Allaart (Physiotherapist).
The NAHA team will also be accompanied by a group
of highly dedicated hockey supporters namely:
Robert Wellens, Gosse de Vries, Kiante Wellens
and Gordon Snow (from the newspaper The Daily
Herald – St. Maarten).

Start of the
new year
The NAHA is proud to start the New Year 2005 with
a good and new ‚face lift’. In the last few
month considerable efforts were deployed to start
this new web site providing you with all the
relevant information concerning our hockey
association and its activities. It is a living web
site and we will assure that the content will
always be up dated and filled with the latest news
in and around our hockey environment in the
Netherlands Antilles.
The NAHA Board is fully committed to do its best
to facilitate the further fostering of our hockey
play across all age groups and play levels. This
means that we will continue in our endeavour to
promote hockey and its sporting values throughout
our 5 Island Territories (Curacao, Bonaire, St.
Maarten, St. Eustatius, Saba). Furthermore we will
strengthen our relationship on regional level with
the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF)
involving in active participation and where needed
taking up responsibilities. We believe that
particular for our small islands such regional
exposure will facilitate better hockey
opportunities and accessibility to support
efforts.
It goes without saying that we will maintain a
very close contact with our friends from other
hockey associations throughout the Pan American
region.

In the coming year we will also foster stronger
ties with the national hockey associations of our
Kingdom. After all, we can benefit from the ever
increasing competitiveness and hockey know how in
the Netherlands. Tapping into this
vast pool of experience will boost our own ability
to service you in a much better way.
On behalf of the entire NAHA hockey board, I would
like to wish you and your families a very
successful year on and off the hockey pitch, lots
of competitive hockey matches and above everything
good health and spirit for you all. Your ongoing
support and commitment to keep the hockey ball
rolling in the Netherlands
Antilles is as always highly appreciated.

NAHA Woman
National Team is participating in the men’s
league
Now this is some news! The NAHA Woman National
Team is participating in the men’s league
competition on Curacao. Due to the limited
play opportunities for the NAHA Woman’s
National Team it was decided that the ladies
will participate in the men’s league
competition enabling them for more regular
matches on a higher competitive level. Knowing
that the men’s league is playing hockey on a
rather “strong edge”, at the beginning
the guys had a bid of reservation playing
against a ladies team.
Well, to be frank, the guys were out for some
real surprise so far! For the first match the
Navy boys could experience first hand what the
NAHA woman team had up their sleeves. After 70
minutes good play the Navy boys were send back
to the locker room with a crystal clear 0:3
defeat. The next match against the men’s team
from CHC was a bid of a reality check for the
ladies, though giving a good fight and showing
a strong team effort, the skill level of CHC
proved too high resulting in a 6:0 defeat for
the ladies. After training even harder the
ladies took than on the men’s team from the ‘Vrienden’.
This game proved again, that with a solid team
effort and fighting spirit, the ladies could
hold on against the constant attack waves of
the men’s team. A successfully converted
penalty corner for the ladies was enough to
drive the second victory of the NAHA National
Woman Team in the men’s competition home. The
1:0 end result is sending a clear message out:
don’t take the ladies for granted. They are
out on the hockey pitch to win. Team captain
Majanka v.d. Barselaar stated with a little
smile on her face: “Well, we are keeping
the men’s competition interesting and alive.
The team is ready for the next games!”.
